NC State’s Michael Boykin Named ACC Wrestler of the Week

197-pound Sophomore Defeats Two Ranked Wrestlers as Wolfpack Sets New School Mark for Most Dual Match Wins

GREENSBORO, N.C. ( — N.C. State sophomore Michael Boykin was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week Tuesday, after leading the Wolfpack to a pair of dual match victories with individual wins over a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers last week in the 197-pound weight class.

Boykin, from Coatesville, Pa., defeated Pitt’s 25th-ranked Nick Bonaccorsi, 3-2, in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Saturday, as the ACC-leading Wolfpack won its fourth straight conference match of the year, downing the Panthers, 28-6. On Sunday, in Morgantown, W.Va., Boykin upset West Virginia’s Jacob Smith, who was ranked eighth nationally in the NCAA Coaches Panel rankings, with a 5-3 triumph in sudden victory in the second overtime session. NC State’s win against the Mountaineers was its 20th of the season, setting a single-season school mark for dual match triumphs.

The wins boosted Boykin’s record on the year to 14-5 and gives him three straight victories against nationally-ranked foes. He moved up to No. 15 (from 18) in the InterMat individual rankings this week. 

Boykin was chosen from a pool of wrestlers with impressive performances, including Virginia Tech redshirt junior Sal Mastriani and Duke redshirt freshman Zach Finesilver.

Mastriani, from Towaco, N.J., turned in a pair of dominating performances as the Hokies kept pace with the Wolfpack, downing West Virginia 32-3 in Blacksburg and Virginia, 31-7, in Charlottesville.

Mastriani defeated West Virginia’s Zachary Moore by technical fall (17-1) at the 5:00 mark of their bout, then came back to record a fall against Virginia’s TJ Miller at the 5:43 mark. In all, he accounted for 11 team points in the two matches.

Finesilver, from Greenwood Village, Col., led Duke to a pair of dual match wins in our nation’s capital as the Blue Devils downed Columbia, 19-16, and American, 23-13 at American University.

Finesilver, wrestling at 141 pounds, defeated Columbia’s Sam Ward by major decision (8-0) and then decisioned Tyler Scotton of American, 5-1. The wins boosted Finesilver to 18-9 on the year,

All three wrestlers will be competing in the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship which will be hosted by the University of Virginia on Sunday, March 6. The one-day tournament, which will take place at the John Paul Jones Arena Center in Charlottesville, Va., will begin at 11 a.m.
