197-pound Sophomore Defeats Two Ranked Wrestlers as Wolfpack Sets New School Mark for Most Dual Match Wins

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) — N.C. State sophomore Michael Boykin was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week Tuesday, after leading the Wolfpack to a pair of dual match victories with individual wins over a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers last week in the 197-pound weight class.

Boykin, from Coatesville, Pa., defeated Pitt’s 25th-ranked Nick Bonaccorsi, 3-2, in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Saturday, as the ACC-leading Wolfpack won its fourth straight conference match of the year, downing the Panthers, 28-6. On Sunday, in Morgantown, W.Va., Boykin upset West Virginia’s Jacob Smith, who was ranked eighth nationally in the NCAA Coaches Panel rankings, with a 5-3 triumph in sudden victory in the second overtime session. NC State’s win against the Mountaineers was its 20th of the season, setting a single-season school mark for dual match triumphs.

The wins boosted Boykin’s record on the year to 14-5 and gives him three straight victories against nationally-ranked foes. He moved up to No. 15 (from 18) in the InterMat individual rankings this week.

Boykin was chosen from a pool of wrestlers with impressive performances, including Virginia Tech redshirt junior Sal Mastriani and Duke redshirt freshman Zach Finesilver.

Mastriani, from Towaco, N.J., turned in a pair of dominating performances as the Hokies kept pace with the Wolfpack, downing West Virginia 32-3 in Blacksburg and Virginia, 31-7, in Charlottesville.

Mastriani defeated West Virginia’s Zachary Moore by technical fall (17-1) at the 5:00 mark of their bout, then came back to record a fall against Virginia’s TJ Miller at the 5:43 mark. In all, he accounted for 11 team points in the two matches.
