NC State’s Max Rohskopf Named ACC Wrestler of the Week
Wolfpack Senior Pins Nation’s Fourth-Ranked Wrestler at NWCA All-Star Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C.—NC State senior Max Rohskopf (Kilbuck, Ohio) was named the inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference 2016-17 Wrestler of the Week after recording the lone pin of the NWCA All-Star Classic last Saturday night in Cleveland, Ohio.
Rohskopf, competing at 157 pounds, a weight class lower than a year ago, countered a takedown with a pin of Michigan’s Brian Murphy at the 5:43 mark of their match. Murphy was the nation’s fourth-ranked wrestler according to InterMat.
Rohskopf was ranked fifth nationally by InterMat last week, but moved up to fourth this week with his victory. He was making his second consecutive appearance in the prestigious All-Star Classic and won his second straight match in the event. Last year he defeated Clark Glass of Oklahoma. He was the 2016 ACC champion at 165.
Rohskopf was chosen over a group that included Connor Bass of Duke, Dom Forys of Pitt and Andrew Atkinson of Virginia. Bass, a senior from Yorkville, Illinois, captured his second straight title at the Southeast Open in Salem, Virginia, winning five straight matches at 174 pounds, including a 9-7 sudden victory win over 13th-ranked Jon Schleifer of Princeton. Two of Bass’ wins were by fall and one by major decision.
Forys, a junior from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, won a pair of bouts in dual matches against Ohio and Campbell. Ranked eighth nationally at 133 pounds, Forys defeated 13th-ranked Cameron Kelly of Ohio, 10-6, and Jonathan Ryan of Campbell, 17-6.
Atkinson, a junior from Lynchburg, Virginia, claimed the 157-pound championship at the Clarion Open in Clarion, Pennsylvania. He defeated five opponents, two by fall and two by technical fall in winning the title.
All four wrestlers will be competing in the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship; which will be hosted by NC State at Reynolds Coliseum on Saturday, March 4. The one-day tournament will begin at 11 a.m.
