GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson’s Michael Melvin and Wake Forest’s Hayden Partain have been named the ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive Players of the Week, while Duke’s Jared Rist was selected as ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Melvin scored the first two goals of his collegiate career on Friday in the Tigers’ 4-1 road win at NC State, helping the team conclude the regular season with a 14-1-2 overall record and a 6-1-1 record in ACC play. Melvin, who played 77 minutes in the contest against the Wolfpack, took just two shots in the game, and scored on both of them. His two goals were scored in the 34th and 60th minutes, and the first goal proved to be the game-winner for Clemson. The sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida, has played in 16 of the Tigers’ 17 games this season, but was making just his fourth start of the year.
Partain scored his first three goals of the season last week, stepping up as the regular season came to a close to score three of the Deacons’ eight goals. The junior midfielder from Frisco, Texas, scored the second goal of the night against Davidson on Oct. 27, marking his first of the season. Looking to claim the No. 1 seed in the ACC Championship, Partain helped Wake Forest get off to a quick start against Louisville in scoring two goals in the first 11 minutes of the game to help Wake Forest to a 4-2 victory.
Rist helped extend the Blue Devils’ win streak to five this past week with a pair of victories. The redshirt senior defender from Durham, North Carolina, helped anchor the defense in allowing just a single goal in the two game and 183 minutes overall. In the final midweek game of the year, he was crucial in the Blue Devils posting a 1-0 shutout of Jacksonville. Three days later in the regular season finale, Rist played the full 90 minutes and headed home the game winner in a 2-1 win over Virginia Tech. Rist leads all Duke players in minutes played and has a goal and four assists this season.
