GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech outside hitter Amanda McKinzie, Georgia Tech outside hitter Teegan Van Gunst and Duke middle blocker Leah Meyer have been named the ACC Volleyball Co-Players and Freshman of the Week, respectively.
McKinzie led the Hokies to a 3-0 record at the Spartan Invitational, where they defeated host No. 19 Michigan State 3-1 for the first road victory over a ranked opponent in program history. McKinzie finished the weekend with 48 kills and a 4.00 kills per set average. She also recorded 33 digs and four service aces. Virginia Tech sits remain perfect with a 6-0 overall record.
Van Gunst had 51 kills and 43 digs in the Yellow Jackets’ four weekend victories. She averaged 3.92 kills per set and 3.31 digs per set on her way to being named the MVP of the UGA Challenge. Van Gunst finished the weekend with six service aces, seven total blocks and two double-doubles. Georgia Tech has won six matches in a row for the first time since winning seven straight in 2010.
Meyer led the Blue Devils with 31 kills at the Kansas Invitational, earning all-tournament honors for her efforts. Meyer hit .431 over the weekend and posted hitting percentages of .391 or higher in all three matches. She posted a season-high 12 kills against Western Illinois and finished the weekend with five service aces, eight digs and eight total blocks.
