GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke’s Zach Mathers and Wake Forest’s Sam Raben have been named the ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.
Mathers registered a hat trick and seven points to lead Duke to a 6-2 victory over No. 23 NC State. Mathers’ hat trick was the first by a Blue Devil since Andrew Wenger did so in 2011 against the Wolfpack. The seven points also matched Wenger’s 2011 total against NC State. The Blue Devil captain had the pass that led to the penalty kick that he ended up taking for the 1-0 lead. He tallied what proved to the game-winning goal in the 34th minute and added the fifth goal in the 52nd minute for the hat trick. The senior midfielder from Keller, Texas, now has seven goals and four assists for 18 points to lead the Blue Devils. His 18 points are 10 more than his previous season-best and just four shy of his previous three seasons combined.
Raben, a freshman defender from Greenwood Village, Colorado, played a key role for the Demon Deacon defense in a 1-0 win over No. 2 North Carolina. Guarding Alan Winn, one of UNC’s biggest threats, Raben came up with two sliding stops in one-on-one coverage situations in the box to keep the Tar Heels off the scoreboard. Wake Forest snapped North Carolina’s 16-game unbeaten streak and was the first defense to hold North Carolina scoreless since Nov. 9, 2014.
