RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 2 seed Louisville only needed one run to top No. 7 seed Syracuse, 1-0, in the third quarterfinal of the 2016 ACC Softball Championship at NC State’s Dail Softball Stadium.
With the win, Louisville (35-14) advances to the tomorrow’s semifinals, where it will face the winner of Notre Dame/Virginia Tech at 3:30 p.m.
Maryssa Becker earned the win after relieving Megan Henlsey in the fifth inning and then retiring seven straight Syracuse batters to end the game. Becker improved 20-10 on the season.
The two teams were scoreless through 3.5 innings before Louisville threatened in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third and one out Nicole Pufahl hit into a double play to end the inning.
Back-to-back singles by Jenna Jordan and Sidney Melton got things started for Louisville in the next inning. Jessica Adell came in to pinch run for Jordan with Brittany Sims at the plate. Sims reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error sending Adell home for the score.
Melton paced the Cardinal bats going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles, including the key one during the scoring sequence.
AnnaMarie Gatti (12-14) threw all 6.0 innings in the circle for Syracuse (27-26) in the loss.
