Lopez, Bakero, and Fjørtoft Earn ACC Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina’s Andy Lopez and Wake Forest’s Jon Bakero have been named the ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive Players of the Week, while Duke’s Markus Fjørtoft  was selected as ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Lopez, a redshirt freshman forward from Mission, Texas, scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Louisville on Friday night. The victory gave the Tar Heels the Coastal Division title with one game remaining in the conference’s regular season. Lopez also scored once in the 6-1 midweek victory at Campbell.

Bakero notched the game-winning goal against No. 8 Notre Dame in the 87th minute to complete the comeback after the Demon Deacons fell behind early in the match. The sophomore forward from Sitges, Spain, deflected a Ricky Greenfelder cross into the top-left corner, the latest game winner of the season for Wake Forest, as the Demon Deacons halted Notre Dame’s eight-game unbeaten streak. Bakero also scored in a midweek game against Georgia State.

A sophomore center back from Asker, Norway, Fjørtoft helped anchor Duke’s defense to a pair of crucial victories last week. The Blue Devils upset No. 10 Elon in a nonconference midweek matchup, allowing the Phoenix just one goal en route to the 2-1 overtime victory. Fjørtoft played all 99 minutes in the game. Three days later, he went the full 90 in holding Pittsburgh to just two shots overall and one on goal as Duke upended Pitt 1-0 to clinch a spot in the ACC Championship. The shutout was the second for the Blue Devils this season. Fjørtoft ranks second on the team in minutes played this season at 1,451.
