Jeff Fischel's ACC Power Poll: Week of January 12, 2015
The ACC Power Poll is compiled each week by ACC Digital Network host Jeff Fischel. Give Jeff your feedback via Twitter (@JeffFischel)!
VIRGINIA (3-0 ACC | 15-0 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: 3 top-25 road wins: Maryland, VCU and Notre Dame this past Saturday. I’m not going to argue Tony Bennett is working with more talent than John Calipari. But the Cavs have the better resume.
DUKE (2-1 ACC | 14-1 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: The freshmen looked like freshmen Sunday in Raleigh. It’s the first time since the Wisconsin game that Duke allowed more than 1 point per possession. Hopefully, just a blip and not the start of a trend.
NOTRE DAME (3-1 ACC | 15-2 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: The Irish lose to UVA, and yet move up from no. 2 to no. 1 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Yes, that’s how good the Hoos’ D is. The loss also ends an Irish home win streak vs Top 10 teams. To see that list, watch my Power Poll!
LOUISVILLE (2-1 ACC | 14-2 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: The Cards are a top 10 team and lose at the buzzer to a top 20 team on the road.. and they drop a spot in my poll. It’s all splitting hairs. The ACC’s top 5 are the best top 5 in the nation. No debate.
NORTH CAROLINA (2-1 ACC | 12-4 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE:Clutch Marcus Paige. And another solid performance from Kennedy Meeks. How good has Meeks been? I do the math—or let someone do the math for me, actually—in the Power Poll.
NC STATE (3-1 ACC | 12-5 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: For the 3rd time in 6 years, the Wolfpack upsets a top-10 Duke team in Raleigh. Go on and celebrate!
MIAMI (1-1 ACC | 11-4 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: A tough week ahead for the Canes: at Duke and at Notre Dame. Even a split would be somewhat shocking. But Coach L is going to need 1 or 2 of those kinds of Ws to get into the tourney.
SYRACUSE (3-0 ACC | 12-4 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: Trevor Cooney hits 7 3s Sunday night and is shooting 39% on 3s this year. Rakeem Christmas has been All-ACC good. But if Chris McCullough is out for awhile, that would be a big blow to the Orange.
CLEMSON (1-2 ACC | 9-6 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: Congrats to the Tigers on a convincing win at the Oakland Zoo. Jaron Blossomgame’s game is.. err.. blossoming. Sorry.
PITT (1-2 ACC | 11-5 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: This team just doesn’t have an identity. Fairly efficient on offense. Mediocre on defense. There’s no go-to guy. No outspoken floor leader. Just a solid-average team that might or might not make the tourney.
WAKE FOREST (1-3 ACC | 9-8 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: In the Deacs 3 ACC games, Devin Thomas is averaging 24 points and 10 rebounds, including some #MustSeeACC plays. He and Codi-Miller McIntyre still need more help, though. If I had to guess: Mitchell Wilbekin could emerge.
GEORGIA TECH (0-3 ACC | 9-6 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: I want to believe. Marcus Georges-Hunt, Charles Mitchell and Demarco Cox form a quality frontline. But the guard play still has a long way to go.
FLORIDA STATE (1-2 ACC | 9-7 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE:I tweeted about the defensive problems Sunday night during the Syracuse game. It’s hard to believe Leonard Hamilton’s teams these last 3 years have struggled so much defensively.
BOSTON COLLEGE (0-3 ACC | 7-7 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: Lots of credit to first-year coach Jim Christian. He’s pulling of a minor miracle on defense. The Eagles are 95th in the nation in defensive efficiency. A BC team hasn’t been in the top 100 since 2005. And last year they were 298th.
VIRGINIA TECH (0-2 ACC | 7-7 OVERALL)
JEFF'S TAKE: You want a bright spot? Freshman Justin Bibbs. He set a career high January 3 against Syracuse with 22 points. Then scored 25 last Tuesday against FSU. Buzz is building, and Bibbs is looking like a great place to start.
