GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke sophomore center Elizabeth Williams and Maryland freshman forward Tierney Pfirman have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced Monday afternoon by league officials and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Williams averaged 20.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.5 blocks and 1.5 assists in a 2-0 week for the Blue Devils, which included a conference win over Georgia Tech (85-52) and another over No. 25 St. John’s (60-42). The two wins last week helped to push Duke’s record to 8-0 for the seventh time in program history.
Against the Yellow Jackets, Williams posted a career-high 25 points to go along with 11 rebounds and six blocked shots, while making 10-of-14 field goals and all five of her free throw attempts. It marked her first double-double of the season and sixth of her career. Against St. John’s, Williams led the Blue Devils with 16 points, seven rebounds, five blocks and two assists. The sophomore from Virginia Beach, Va., finished the week connecting on 60.7 percent of her attempts from the floor.
Pfirman averaged 10.0 points and 3.0 rebounds for the Terrapins, who managed a 2-1 week, highlighted by a conference win over Virginia, 79-55. Against the Cavaliers, in her ACC debut, Pfirman scored 17 points, and added three rebounds and an assist. The native of Williamsport, Pa., followed that up with 11 points and five rebounds in a 50 point win over George Mason to close out the week. The Rookie of the Week honor is her first of the season.
