Football

  • Virginia Tech-Boise State most viewed ESPN regular-season college football game. Labor Day game viewed by a record 7,251,601 households

    Men’s Soccer

    • The ACC dominates the College Soccer News’ Top 30 poll as the league owns six of the top 11 spots, including three of the top four positions. Reigning National Champion Virginia is currently ranked No. 2, while North Carolina and Maryland follow close behind at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Boston College, Duke and Wake Forest make-up the remaining programs nationally ranked. The same six programs also rank among the Top 12 of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/HendrickCars.com weekly poll. Virginia (No. 2) is joined by North Carolina (No. 4) and Boston College (No. 5) as top-five selections.
       
    • Head coach Ed Kelly, who is in his 23rd year at Boston College and was inducted into the New England Soccer Hall of Fame last fall, has guided the Eagles to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and seven in the last decade. Kelly looks for his 250th career win in his next contest - versus Maryland in Chestnut Hill, Ma.

    Women’s Soccer

    •  Virginia senior Meghan Lenczyk has scored the game-winning goal in all four of the Cavaliers’ victories this season. With 31 career goals, she has now moved into the top 10 in UVa school history. With seven goals this season, she has already matched her 2009 goal total. 
    •  North Carolina is now 700-36-23 in Anson Dorrance’s 32 seasons as head coach, including a 4-0-1 mark to begin the 2010 campaign.
    • After becoming Miami’s all-time leading scorer earlier in the week, the Hurricanes’ Brittney Steinbruch bagged MVP honors in last weekend’s FGCU Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic. The senior forward earned the honor despite not recording a goal or an assist in the two tournament matches. She consistently pulled defenders away from her teammates and fired a classic-high 18 shots.

    Field Hockey

    • After two weeks of competition, ACC field hockey teams maintained a dominant presence in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll with all six teams ranked in the top 10...league teams continue to fill the top three spots.

    Volleyball

    • The ACC had 25 volleyball student-athletes named to all-tournament teams this past weekend at their respective events ... Clemson’s Serenat Yaz, Maryland’s Brittney Grove, Virginia’s Jess O’Shoney and Virginia Tech’s Cara Baarendse were also honored as tournament MVPs.

    Men's Golf

    • A pair of Georgia Tech alumni Matt Kuchar and Stewart Cink are among the 12 team members on Team USA for the 2010 Ryder Cup. Two more alumni of ACC schools are assistant captains for the team: Davis Love III (North Carolina) and Jeff Sluman (Florida State).
