Though she graduated in 2005, Lauryn Williams is still a familiar face around the University of Miami. An Olympian and a world champion track athlete, Williams's trains at Miami's weight and track facilities, and works in the athletic department.
Williams was a member of SAAC during her time at Miami, and served as president during her final year.
Now, as she trains on her own and coordinates life skills and community programs for Miami athletes, Williams is heavily involved in the Miami community.
She works as a mentor for the Fun 4 Kidz program, a Miami-Dade based non-profit program that aims to provide children with inspiring role models.
Williams certainly serves as an inspiration, as she spends time organizing activities and interactions between University of Miami athletes and children from South Miami Middle School. The athletes and students meet for sporting events, meals and even community service projects.
As a former member of SAAC, Williams takes the idea of promoting interaction and mutual support through community service, and ties it into athletics. She still attends UM's SAAC meetings as a representative of the athletic department and offers advice to current student-athletes.
Williams will continue to train in preparation for the London Olympics, and use her experiences and passions to organize life skills activities for student-athletes and ways to improve the Miami community.
