Broderick, King Lead Florida State Past Pitt in ACC Softball Opener

Seminoles advance to Friday’s semifinals with 8-0 win

RALEIGH, N.C. – Meghan King threw a complete-game three-hit shutout and the Florida State offense struck early as the top-seeded Seminoles defeated Pitt, 8-0, in the first quarterfinal of the 2016 ACC Softball Championship at NC State’s Dail Softball Stadium.

With the win, the Seminoles (46-8) advance to the tomorrow’s semifinals, where they will face the winner of Boston College and North Carolina at 1 p.m. The shutout was the 17th on the season for Florida State.

King improved to 21-3, and tallied her 16th complete game of the year. Sydney Broderick led the way for Florida State at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs driven in.

The Seminoles struck first in the bottom of the second. Cali Harrod singled to left field, driving in Broderick for the game’s first run. A bases-loaded walk by Morgan Klaevemann, followed by a run scoring on a fielder’s choice and an RBI single from Jessica Warren gave Florida State an early 4-0 lead.

Pitt threatened in the top of the fifth inning. Erin Hershman doubled to right center with one out, followed by two walks to load the bases. King got a strikeout and induced an infield popup to escape the threat.

In the bottom of the fifth, Carsyn Gordon singled up the middle to drive in Broderick and push the Seminole lead to 5-0. Pitt reliever Kayla Harris got the Panthers out of the bases-loaded jam to escape further damage.

Broderick connected on a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, her fourth of the year, to make it an 8-0 final score.

Jenna Modic (7-10) threw 4.1 innings in the circle for Pitt in the loss, allowing four earned runs.
