197-pound Redshirt Senior Records Two Falls in Duke’s Western Trip
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) — Duke senior Conner Hartmann was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week after recording a pair of falls as the Blue Devils split a pair of dual matches on the West Coast Saturday and Sunday. Duke dropped a 27-15 decision to Stanford on Saturday but came back to defeat Cal Poly on Sunday, 28-18.
Hartmann, a two-time All-American from Port Orchard, Washington, pinned Michael Sojka of Stanford at the 4:36 mark of their bout, then came back with the quickest fall of his career, taking just 22 seconds to pin JT Goodwin of Cal Poly.
The two wins for Hartmann, who is ranked fifth nationally in the 197-pound weight class, pushed his overall record 16-1 on the year and kept him undefeated in dual matches. Hartmann now has four falls on the year and leads the Blue Devils in dual points with 32. He has scored bonus points in five of his seven duals this season.
He was chosen from a group of nominees that included NC State heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski and North Carolina 149-pounder Evan Henderson.
Gwiazdowski, the two-time NCAA national champion, set the tone for the Wolfpack’s 35-7 win over Virginia, recording a technical fall against UVA’s Patrick Gillen, 19-3. Gwiazdowski, from Delanson, N.Y., pushed his overall record to 20-0 on the season, in winning his 75th consecutive match, the longest such current streak in the nation.
Henderson, from new Florence, Pa., was very impressive in the Tar Heels’ 27-13 loss to 12th-ranked Virginia Tech on Saturday, recording a fall against the Hokies’ Sal Mastriani at the 2:39 mark. Henderson is ranked seventh nationally by InterMat at 149 pounds. The pin was his seventh of the year as he improved to 15-4 overall and 8-2 since moving to the 149-pound weight class.
All three wrestlers will be competing in the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship which will be hosted by the University of Virginia on Sunday, March 6. The one-day tournament, which will take place at the John Paul Jones Arena Center in Charlottesville, Va., will begin at 11 a.m.
