Miami Defeats Duke, 22-10

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. ( – Duke Johnson carried the ball 25 times for 155 yards and one score as Miami beat Duke 22-10 in front of 44,539 fans at Sun Life Stadium.

The Hurricanes took the opening possession of the contest and drove 63 yards on nine snaps for a 29-yard field goal by Michael Badgley. On its second drive, Miami went 76 yards on eight plays for a seven-yard scoring run by Johnson, but Badgley’s point after touchdown kick was wide and the Hurricanes led, 9-0, with 6:57 left in the opening period.

Duke got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter with a six-snap, 73-yard march that ended with a seven-yard touchdown jaunt by Shaquille Powell. The march featured a heavy dose of Powell, who rushed for 44 yards, while Anthony Boone hooked up with Johnell Barnes on a 29-yard strike to put the Blue Devils inside the red zone.

The first half featured 12 combined punts as each squad went 1-for-8 on third down.

In the third quarter, Miami took advantage of a Blue Devil turnover to push the lead to 16-7 when Brad Kaaya tossed a 28-yard scoring pass to Herb Waters. Later in the quarter, Duke responded with a 33-yard field goal by Ross Martin to make the score 16-10 at the end of three period. Martin’s boot was set up by a fumble recovery for Breon Borders after Jeremy Cash stripped the pigskin from a Miami ball carrier.
