Bruening and Ferrell Earn ACC Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina’s Nils Bruening has been named the ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Wake Forest’s Alec Ferrell was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week.

Bruening scored four goals, one shy of the school record and the most by a North Carolina men’s soccer player in 14 years, in a 5-0 shutout of No. 16 Boston College on Friday night to keep the Tar Heels a perfect 3-0 in ACC play. The sophomore forward from Hamburg, Germany, came off the bench for the first time all season and scored his four goals in a mere 41 minutes of action.

Ferrell posted two shutouts last week as Wake Forest set program records with its seventh consecutive shutout and a stretch of 728:28 without allowing a goal. The redshirt senior goalkeeper from Westlake, Ohio, made five saves against Florida International on Tuesday night in a 2-0 nonconference victory. Against NC State, Ferrell tallied four more saves to bring his total for the year to 19 without allowing a goal. He made an acrobatic save in the 54th minute when he stopped a shot by Lukas Zarges at point-blank after a cross into the box.
