Eagles’ Crew Takes Gold Medal; BC Wins Six Medals at Prestigious Knecht Cup
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) — Boston College’s First Varsity Four was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week after taking home the gold medal Sunday at the Knecht Cup, held on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, New Jersey.
BC’s First Varsity Four won both its heat and semifinal races on Saturday, before capturing the Grand Final on Sunday with a time of 7:30.30, edging ACC rival North Carolina (7:30.78) for the gold. BC won the title against a total of 34 crews that competed at the Knecht Cup in the Varsity Four event.
The Boston College First Varsity Four is composed of sophomore coxswain Amanda Bakke (Poughkeepsie, New York); sophomore Michela Karrash (North Wales, Pennsylvania); freshman Paige Vignone (Wyckoff, New Jersey); sophomore Elizabeth McKernan (Blue Bell, Pennsylvania) and freshman Olivia Rogus (Chester, New Jersey).
The Varsity Four finish highlighted six medals that BC won on Sunday, in what Eagle head coach Steve Fiske termed “the best team performance in program history.”
BC also finished first in the Novice Four, second in the First Varsity Eight, third in the Second Varsity Eight, the Second Varsity Four and the Third Varsity Eight races.
Boston College will next be in action this Saturday, when the Eagles face Boston University and Rhode Island on the Charles River in Boston.
All nine ACC rowing teams will also be in action at the 17th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championships, which will be held on Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, South Carolina.
