ACC Women’s Soccer: Florida State’s Bakowska-Mathews and Virginia Tech’s Murielle Tiernan Named ACC Co-Players of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State senior midfielder Marta Bakowska-Mathews and Virginia Tech sophomore forward Murielle Tiernan have been named the ACC Co-Players of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league.

Tiernan tallied 10 points on five goals, including two game winners and an assist in three Hokie wins last week. The Ashburn, Va., native scored two goals in wins over Longwood (4-1) and Buffalo (5-0) and provided a goal in a 3-0 win over East Carolina. Tiernan, in her second season at Virginia Tech already ranks fifth on Hokies’ game-winning goals list with seven. This season, she leads the league with 16 points and seven goals. 

Bakowska-Mathews posted nine points on four goals and an assist in leading Florida State to a pair of shut-out wins over St. John’s and Stetson. The Kent, England, native had a goal and an assist in the 4-0 win over the Red Storm and concluded the week recording her first career hat trick against the Hatters. Bakowska-Mathews scored three of the Seminoles’ first four goals, including the game winner in the seventh minute, en route to the 7-0 victory. It is the second player of the week honor of her career.

Virginia Tech and Florida State, which are ranked No. 3 and No. 6 in the latest Soccer America Top 25 released Tuesday, are two of six ACC teams ranked in the poll and one of four in the Top 10 (No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 Virginia Tech, No. 6 Florida State, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 19 Clemson).
