Atlantic Coast Conference Announces Cross Country Performers of the Week

Florida State, Syracuse sweep season’s first honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four student-athletes who turned in outstanding individual performances highlight the first group of Atlantic Coast Conference Performers of the Week of the 2016 cross country season.

Men’s Performer of the Week – Harry Mulenga, Sr., Florida State
Mulenga secured his first NCAA Division I cross country victory, cruising the 6400-meter State Farm Field/Kennedy Trails course in 20:04.44 for a seven-second victory at the Covered Bridge Open. The Chililabombwe, Zambia, native was first to the finish in the 10-team field which included Florida, Appalachian State, East Tennessee, VMI and East Carolina.

Men’s Freshman of the Week – Griff Molino, Freshman, Syracuse
Molino led a pack of eight Syracuse runners (three racing as unattached) to cross the finish line at the Harry Lang Invitational and sweep the meet for the Orange. The Williamsport, Pa., native racing in his first meet for Syracuse, finished first in the overall meet in in 20:08.8.

Women’s Performer of the Week – Carmela Cardama Baez, Sophomore, Florida State
Baez scored her first collegiate victory at the season-opening Covered Bridge Open, covering the 5000-meter course in 18:10.78 to lead the Seminoles to a third-place finish in the 10-team field at the State Farm Field/Kennedy Trails course in Boone, N.C. The Vigo, Spain, sophomore who earned All-ACC honors as a freshman, missed both the 2016 indoor and outdoor track & field seasons due to injury.

Women’s Freshman of the Week – Madeleine Davison, Freshman, Syracuse
Davison, competing in her first collegiate meet, pulled away down the stretch of the Harry Lang Invitational to take the individual title, while leading the team to a clean sweep of the meet’s top-five positions. The Wexford, Pa., native completed the 5k course in 17:49.7 to seal the victory.
