ACC Has 36 Wrestlers Ranked in First NCAA Division I Coaches Rankings

NCAA Rankings are the First of Four for 2015-16

GREENSBORO, NC (theACC.com) — Led by the top two ranked wrestlers at 285 pounds in No. 1 Nick Gwiazdowski and No. 2 Ty Walz of Virginia Tech, the ACC had 36 wrestlers ranked in the first of four NCAA coaches panel rankings for the 2015-16 season which was released Thursday.

The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine qualifies for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. This year’s Championship will be held March 17-19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The coaches’ rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament, For rankings purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated a starter at a respective weight class. In order to be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents and have wrestled within the last 30 days.

Two Virginia Tech wrestlers ranked in the nation’s top 10 by most wrestling ;publications—Nick Brascetta at 157 pounds and Zach Epperly at 174 pounds—were not ranked due to the minimums.
NC State led all ACC schools with eight selections, followed by Pitt (7), Virginia Tech and North Carolina with six each, Virginia (5) and Duke (4). 

Gwiazdowski, the two-time national champion who has won 75 consecutive matches, the longest current streak in Division I, is the only ACC wrestler who is top ranked.

Twelve ACC grapplers, though, are ranked in the nation’s top 10, including Walz of Virginia Tech (2), Joey Dance of Virginia Tech (125), Kevin Jack of NC State (141) and Ethan Ramos (174), all ranked third; Thomas Gantt of NC State (157), who is ranked fourth; Duke’s Conner Hartmann (197) who is fifth; Virginia’s George DiCamillo (sixth at 133); North Carolina’s Evan Henderson (149) and NC State’s Max Rohskopf (165), who are ranked seventh; Virginia Tech’s Solomon Chishko (174) , who is eighth; and John Staudenmeyer of North Carolina (165), Pitt’s Mikey Racciato (141) and Virginia Tech’s Jared Haught (197) who are each ranked 10th.
