Duke’s Maurer and Duryea sweep honors following two victories
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke senior Kerrin Maurer has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Blue Devil junior goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea picked up ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. Each played key roles as Duke posted two wins last week, including an upset of No. 5 Northwestern.
Maurer paced a balanced Blue Devil attack in two victories, totaling a team-high 10 points against Northwestern and William & Mary. In Thursday’s 15-9 upset of the Wildcats, she tallied two goals inside the final 13 minutes to help Duke secure the win. Maurer collected another hat trick Sunday against the Tribe, the Setauket, New York, native’s third of the season, and also added two assists. In addition, Maurer continued to lead Duke at the draw, winning nine in the two contests. Her six draw controls against Northwestern helped the Blue Devils win the category by a 17-9 margin.
Duryea, of Beverly, Massachusetts, anchored an outstanding pair of defensive performances by the Blue Devils on the weekend. The unit surrendered just two second-half goals against No. 5 Northwestern in an upset of the Wildcats Thursday in Northbrook, Illinois. Duke’s defense also kept Northwestern off the board for a span of nearly 11 minutes late in the contest to propel the Blue Devils to the victory, the program’s first over the Wildcats since 2006. In Sunday’s 17-7 win over visiting William & Mary, Duryea matched a career-high with three caused turnovers and picked up three ground balls in addition to posting nine saves for the third consecutive outing. In that contest, Duke held the Tribe without a goal until the 15:39 mark in the second half.
