Hamby earns second career honor
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest senior forward Dearica Hamby has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Louisville forward Myisha Hines-Allen has been tabbed the ACC Freshman of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Hamby, the ACC’s leader in scoring with 24.8 points per game, led the Demon Deacons to a 2-1 week with wins over Charlotte (65-58) and Montana (73-60) at the Cancun Challenge. Hamby scored a career-high 40 points in 32 minutes on 13-of-17 shooting from the floor, and made 14-of-16 free throws in Wake Forest’s victory over Montana. Hamby also posted her third double-double of the season with 25 points and 10 rebounds against Charlotte. The Marietta, Georgia, native was named to the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament team for her efforts. Hamby’s Player of the Week honor is the second of her career as she last collected the honor on Jan. 27, 2014.
Hines-Allen earned her first Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 18.3 points on 71 percent shooting and 4.3 rebounds in Louisville’s wins over Western Kentucky (89-67), Lafayette (102-61) and Valparaiso (86-59). She totaled 63 minutes over the three games and committed just two turnovers. The Montclair, New Jersey, native has posted double-digit scoring outputs in each game this season, including a career-high 21 points in the Cardinals’ win at Valparaiso.
The ACC has five teams ranked in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, including four in the Top 10 – the most of any league.
