ACC has 11 teams playing in postseason tournaments
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three Atlantic Coast Conference teams, Virginia, NC State and Georgia Tech, have been selected to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), and takes the ACC’s total postseason participants to 11. The Cavaliers, Wolfpack and Yellow Jackets all begin play in the 64-team event on Thursday, March 19.
Virginia (17-13) received an automatic bid to the tournament, as the Cavaliers were the top rated team from the ACC to not receive an NCAA Tournament bid, while NC State (16-14) and Georgia Tech (18-14) were at-large selections.
The Cavaliers, Wolfpack and Yellow Jackets join fellow ACC members Duke, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse, all of which earned NCAA Championship berths, in continuing strong seasons.
Virginia will play at Old Dominion, NC State will play at ETSU and Georgia Tech will host Elon on Thursday, with all three games tipping at 7 p.m. Should all three teams advance to the second round, the Cavaliers will meet the winner of Villanova and Maine, the Wolfpack will play the winner of East Carolina and Radford, and the Yellow Jackets will see the winner of Arkansas State and Western Michigan. All times, dates and location for the second round will be determined by the WNIT shortly after the previous round is complete.
