Notre Dame’s Loyd recognized; Pitt’s Diop named Freshman Of The Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame junior Jewell Loyd has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Pitt’s Yacine Diop earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
In a split of two games against top-10 opponents last week, Loyd averaged 29.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game. The Lincolnwood, Illinois, native started her week by stuffing the stat sheet with game highs of 27 points, eight rebounds and a career high-tying six assists in a wire-to-wire 92-72 win over former ACC foe (and No. 15/10) Maryland in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Loyd then fueled an early surge against third-ranked UConn in the Jimmy V Classic, scoring 15 points (5-of-5 field goals, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range) in the opening 10 minutes to give the Fighting Irish an early 10-point lead before finishing with career high-tying efforts of 31 points and four steals. Loyd became the fifth player in school history with four career 30-point games. Loyd has scored at least 20 points in seven of nine games this season, including each of the past four. This is Loyd first ACC Player of the Week honor of the season.
Pitt’s Diop averaged 18 points and 9.5 rebounds last week while shooting 73.9 percent from the floor. In last week’s win at Ohio State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, she grabbed the decisive offensive rebound with 10 seconds left to ice the game. The Dakar, Senegal, native followed that up with her first career double‐double at Duquesne by going for 22 points and 10 rebounds, which both set new career‐high. Diop added four assists against Duquesne.
