Loyd earns fourth player of the week nod of the season
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame junior Jewell Loyd has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Duke’s Azura Stevens earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Loyd averaged 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while shooting .455 from the three-point line and .895 from the free-throw line in a pair of Notre Dame victories last week. Loyd packed the stat sheet in both games, beginning with a game-high 21 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals in a Big Monday win over No. 10/11 Duke. Her 21 points against the Blue Devils marked the seventh 20-point game in eight outings against ranked teams this season. She then piled up a game-high 31 points, including 23 in the second half, five rebounds and two assists in Thursday night’s win at Georgia Tech. It was Loyd’s ACC-leading fourth 30-point game of the season and seventh of her career, setting new school records in both categories. Loyd also leads the ACC with 16 20-point games, tying for fourth on the Notre Dame single-season list and most since Ruth Riley’s 16 such outings in 2000-01. This is Loyd’s fourth ACC Player of the Week honor of the season.
Stevens collected two double-doubles in two road games for the week, while shooting 47.8 from the floor and averaging 13.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals. She totaled 13 points and 10 rebounds at fourth-ranked Notre Dame and netted 13 points and 10 rebounds at N.C. State as well. She has notched a career-best three straight games with double-doubles and has seven double-doubles on the season, which ranks tied third on Duke’s freshman record charts. The three-time ACC Freshman of the Week owns nine double-digit rebound games on the season to rank tied third on the Duke freshman record charts.
The ACC will conclude regular-season play this week. Seeds for the 2015 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be announced late in the day on Sunday, March 1, while tournament play gets underway on Wednesday, March 4.
