Turner is the first freshman to earn player of the week honors this season
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame freshman Brianna Turner has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Freshman of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Turner became just the second NCAA Division I player since 1999-2000 to record 29 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks in a single game (first since Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris versus Missouri on March 11, 2008), posting those career-high marks on Thursday in an 89-79 win at No. 12/10 North Carolina. Not only did Turner register her fourth double-double of the season, she also logged her sixth 20-point game of the year. In addition, Turner’s seven blocks tied for the fifth-most in a single game in school history (she had seven on Jan. 4 at No. 21/22 Syracuse), while her 18 rebounds equal the eighth-most boards in a single game in program history. Turner leads the ACC in scoring in conference games with 20.8 points per game.
Turner owns five ACC Freshman of the Week honors this season, the most of any rookie. She is the first freshman to earn Player of the Week honors since former North Carolina guard Diamond DeShields collected the honor on Feb. 17, 2014.
No. 6/7 Notre Dame hosts No. 5/6 Tennessee tonight at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. The game will also be available on the WatchESPN app.
