GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina sophomore Stephanie Mavunga has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Virginia’s Mikayla Venson earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.

Mavunga notched her team-leading eighth double-double with 25 points (one point shy of career high) and 14 rebounds in a 72-60 win over Boston College in No. 16/12 North Carolina’s only game last week. Mavunga had 12 points and 10 rebounds alone in the second half, helping the Tar Heels overcome an eight-point deficit early in the second stanza. It is Mavunga’s third Player of the Week honor of the season as she also received the award on November 24 and January 5.

Venson averaged 17.0 points and shot 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from 3-point range this week, while helping to lead the Cavaliers to a pair of victories over NC State and Clemson. Venson was 6-of-6 from 3-point range in the victory over NC State, setting the Virginia school record for 3-point efficiency in a game. With Virginia trailing by five points with five minutes left in the game, Venson scored eight-straight points, including hitting a pair of three-pointers, in a span of 2:18 to give Virginia a 63-60 lead. The Arlington, Va., native finished the game with 22 points, and also had a critical block down the stretch to help the Cavaliers get the win over the Wolfpack.

No. 13 North Carolina is one of six ACC teams ranked in this week’s Associated Press Top 25. Along with the Tar Heels, Notre Dame is ranked No. 4 followed by No. 8 Louisville, No. 9 Florida State, No. 15 Duke and No. 25 Syracuse.
