Scarpa totals three goals in wins over UCLA and Nebraska; Naughton leads ND to a pair of shutouts
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina sophomore forward Jessie Scarpa has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Notre Dame senior defender Katie Naughton has been selected as the ACC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week following their performances helping their teams to victory.
Scarpa scored three goals on the weekend to lead North Carolina to a pair of victories as the Tar Heels beat Nebraska 3-0 in Lincoln and 2013 NCAA champion UCLA 3-1 in Chapel Hill. At Nebraska, Scarpa scored a second-half goal to put the game out of reach for the Tar Heels on September 11. Two days later against UCLA, the Lakeland, Florida, native scored on a breakaway, converting her own rebound to give UNC a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute. After UCLA cut UNC’s lead in half, Scarpa picked the pocket of a Bruins defender and scored the insurance goal with 5:08 left in the match.
Naughton once again provided a formidable presence on the Irish back line, allowing just six combined shots in wins over Big Ten opponents Indiana (2-0) and Michigan (2-0) over the weekend. The Elk Grove Village, Illinois, native played a key role in clearing opponents’ threats out from in front of the net and has been a stalwart on a unit that has allowed an average of just 1.9 shots per game through eight contests.
The 29th season of ACC play will commence this weekend with Wake Forest hosting Miami on Friday, Sept. 18. Saturday will feature two top 25 match-ups with No. 13/4 Notre Dame playing at No. 11/8 Clemson and No. 12/9 Virginia Tech hosting No. 4/3 North Carolina. Sunday’s slate includes four games: Louisville at Boston College, No. 21/15 Duke hosting No. 3/6 Florida State, NC State at Pitt and No. 1/2 Virginia hosting Syracuse.
