ACC Women’s Lacrosse: Players of the Week Named

North Carolina’s Hazar and Virginia’s Vander Kolk recognized

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina’s Ela Hazar has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Virginia’s Rachel Vander Kolk is this week’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Tar Heel midfielder Hazar tallied a career-high six points on two goals and a career-high four assists in North Carolina’s win at No. 4 Syracuse that sealed the ACC regular season championship on Saturday. Her two goals came in the first half as she helped North Carolina to an 8-7 lead at the break. Hazar also had assists on each of UNC’s final three goals of the day, including the game-winner.

Sophomore goalie Vander Kolk had 10 saves against 28 shots to hold No. 5 Louisville to nine goals. The Severna Park, Maryland, native had six of her 10 saves in the first half to limit the Cardinals to just three goals as UVA took an 8-3 lead. As Louisville cut the lead to 10-9 with four minutes remaining, the Cardinals had one final chance to score with 11 seconds remaining, but Vander Kolk had her 10th save of the game to secure the win. She also had two ground balls and a caused turnover in the game.

ACC regular season play will wrap up this weekend with three games: Virginia at Virginia Tech (April 22), Louisville at Syracuse (April 23) and Duke at North Carolina (April 23). The complete 2016 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship Bracket will be released following the completion of the games on Saturday.
