ACC Women’s Lacrosse: Notre Dame Sweeps Weekly Honors

Fortunato and Giacolone recognized for their efforts in win over No. 9 Boston College

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – It is a Notre Dame sweep of Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse weekly honors as junior attacker Cortney Fortunato has been named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and freshman goalie Samantha Giacolone is the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Fortunato recorded a seven-point day on five goals and two assists to help Notre Dame open ACC play with a dominating 14-4 win over No. 9 Boston College. Three of her five goals and both of her assists came during a 10-0 Irish run which gave them a commanding 10-2 lead. Also included in her five-goal tally were two free-position shots. Fortunato has scored at least four goals in each of Notre Dame’s three games this season. She also caused two turnovers, giving her seven on the young season and ranking third on the team despite playing attack.

Giacolone made 13 saves, the most by a Notre Dame goalie since 2013, to help the Irish past the ninth-ranked Eagles on Sunday. She recorded a 76.5 percent save percentage, stopping 13 of BC’s 17 shots on net, including eight crucial saves in the first half as the Irish built their lead. The Manorville, New York, native also gathered three ground balls and proved to be an effective outlet passer in starting Notre Dame’s transition offense.
