Panousis averaged 18.5 points in wins at Penn State and No. 8 Tennessee
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech junior guard Vanessa Panousis has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Boston College freshman guard Mariella Fasoula earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Panousis led the Hokies to two Power-5 non-conference road wins on the week. Virginia Tech opened the week by defeating Penn State, 64-59, helping the ACC to tie the Big Ten in the 2015 Big Ten/ACC Challenge and retain the trophy. The Hokies followed that up with a historic win at No. 8/8 Tennessee, defeating the Lady Vols with a decisive 57-43 win in Knoxville.
Panousis dropped in 16 points at Penn State despite playing just 25 minutes. She clinched the game for the Hokies in the final 30 seconds, going 4-of-4 from the free-throw line to seal the victory. Against the Lady Vols, Panousis shot 5-of-8 from outside the arc, connecting on 62.5 percent from long range, with three of her five 3-pointers coming in the second half to help spark the Tech offense. In addition, Panousis was again perfect from the line, going 6-of-6 in the final 1:10 as the Hokies closed out the game with a 13-0 run.
Fasoula had a break-out performance as she led Boston College to a win at Purdue, 58-56, in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Dec. 3. Fasoula shot 11-for-15 from the floor and grabbed a team-high nine boards for 23 points in the win. A native of Greece, Fasoula scored nine of her team-high 23 points in the fourth quarter.
In just her third start, Fasoula gave BC a 55-54 lead with 1:14 to play, which set up Nicole Boudreau’s game-winning shot with eight seconds on the clock.
