ACC Women’s Basketball: Player and Rookie of the Week Announced

ND’s Ogunbowale and Pitt’s Whitney collect honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame sophomore guard Arike Ogunbowale has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Pittsburgh freshman guard Jasmine Whitney earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.

Ogunbowale scored a career-high 30 points on the back of a 12-for-13 shooting performance in Notre Dame’s season-opening win over preseason MAC favorite Central Michigan. She went a perfect 5-for-5 on 3-pointers, just the third time a Notre Dame player has been perfect behind the arc with at least five attampts and the first since 2000. She also accounted for two steals in the win.

Whitney led the Panthers with a double-double of 17 points and 11 assists in her collegiate debut in Pitt’s 89-54 win over Mount St. Mary’s. She went 6-of-7 from the field, while making the first six consecutive shots of her career, including a perfect 5-of-5 performance from beyond the arc. She played the most minutes of any Pitt player in the victory and helped the Panthers finish the game with 23 assists on 32 made field goals.

ACC teams are back in action tonight with four games, including No. 12 Florida State hosting No. 3 Connecticut at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.
