ACC Women’s Basketball: Georgia Tech’s Whiteside and Wake Forest’s Stephenson Collect Weekly Honors

First weekly honors of the season awarded

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech senior Aaliyah Whiteside has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Wake Forest’s Ariel Stephenson earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel. 

Whiteside led the Yellow Jackets to two wins over Loyola Chicago and St. Francis Brooklyn to kick of the 2015-16 season. Whiteside averaged 21.5 points per game over the opening weekend, while accounting for 25 percent of Georgia Tech’s points. In the season opening 84-77 win against Loyola, Whiteside scored a team-high 22 points and led the team in rebounding with eight.  Her 22 points were the second most in the ACC on opening night.  In Tech’s 89-51 win against St. Francis, Whiteside led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points and had a team-high three steals.

Stephenson scored a game-high 21 points in her collegiate debut to lead the Deacs in their win over LSU. She also pulled down seven rebounds and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line against the Tigers. She followed it up with another double-figure scoring day, putting in 13 points in Wake Forest’s win against ETSU.
