ACC Women’s Basketball: Florida State’s Thomas Named Player of the Week

Boston College’s Fasoula earns second Rookie of the Week honor

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State sophomore forward Shakayla Thomas has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Boston College freshman center Mariella Fasoula earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.

Thomas earned the first ACC Player of the Week honor of her career after averaging 23.0 points on 64.3 percent field goal shooting, and 9.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week that included wins over Boston College and Georgia Tech. Thomas contributed 14 points in the Seminoles’ 75-42 win over the Eagles before scoring a career-high 32 points to lead Florida State over Georgia Tech (75-69) on Jan. 10. Aside from setting a career high in points, Thomas also recorded career highs in rebounds (14), field goals made (14) and field goals attempted (20) against the Yellow Jackets. Her 32 points are an ACC-single game high and matches an ACC season high in overall games.

Fasoula averaged 16 points on 55.6 percent shooting from the floor, and seven rebounds as the Eagles went 1‐1 last week. On the road against No. 19/15 Florida State, Fasoula scored 13 points and grabbed five boards in the tough loss. The Eagles’ rookie rebounded with a 9‐for‐11 performance in a home win against Yale (73-60) on Sunday to finish with with 19 points and nine boards. This is Fasoula’s second ACC Rookie of the Week honor, as she also earned the award on Dec. 7.

ACC play continues Thursday, Jan. 14, with seven games.
