Wake Forest’s Penna earns second Rookie of the Week honor

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke sophomore forward Azurá Stevens has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Wake Forest freshman forward Elisa Penna earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.

Stevens earned her second ACC Player of the Week honor of the season after she averaged 29.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals in helping lead Duke to league wins over Clemson and North Carolina. Stevens tallied a career-high 33 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal in 36 minutes at Clemson. She hit 11-of-19 field goals and drained a career-high 3-of-4 from downtown. The 33 points was a season-high for the ACC this season and was tied for the 12th most points in Duke single game history. She also tallied an ACC-best 12th double-double to close the week against arch-rival North Carolina with 26 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal in 36 minutes. For the week, she hit 55.0 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from downtown and was perfect from the charity stripe, making all 11 free throw attempts.

Stevens was also named to the USBWA Midseason Player of the Year Watch List today.

Penna set new career highs in points in both games last week as Wake Forest won back-to-back ACC regular season games for the first time since the 2013-14 season. Penna notched a then-career-high 18 points in Thursday’s win over North Carolina and grabbed a career-high five steal in the victory. On Sunday at Boston College, Penna set a new career-high with 22 points that included a 12-of-12 performance from the free throw line. Penna hit eight free throws in the final 3:10 of Sunday’s game against the Eagles to help Wake Forest seal the victory. This is Penna’s first ACC Rookie of the Week honor.
