Wake Forest’s Campbell and North Carolina’s Watts honored

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest sophomore guard Amber Campbell has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while North Carolina freshman guard Stephanie Watts earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.

Campbell averaged 23 points and four rebounds as Wake Forest earned victories on the road at Clemson and at home over Duke last week. At Clemson, Campbell posted a team-high 19 points, six rebounds and four steals in the 55-45 victory. She followed-up three days later with a career-high 27 points as Wake Forest defeated the Blue Devils, 64-58, for the first time since March 5, 1993, snapping a streak of 45-straight losses. The Demon Deacons have won four straight ACC games for the first time since the 1987-88 season, when head coach Jen Hoover was a freshman for the Deacs.

Watts earned her third Rookie of the Week honor after averaging 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds for North Carolina last week. She led the Tar Heels in scoring in both games with a consistent effort of 18 points and eight rebounds in a win over Virginia Tech, and then 19 points and nine rebounds at No. 10 Florida State.

Watts also went 7-of-8 from the free throw line, and made six 3-pointers, including four against the Seminoles on Sunday. Watts has previously earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors on Dec. 21 and Jan. 4.
