Florida State student-athletes combine for first award sweep of the year
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State junior outside hitter Nicole Walch and freshman outside hitter Milica Kubura have earned this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball honors, as Walch was named Player of the Week and Kubura was tabbed Freshman of the Week.
Walch earns her second Player of the Week honors after rallying the Seminoles from a 0-2 deficit on the road at Pittsburgh. Facing adversity in a packed Fitzgerald Field house, Florida State came out as a new team in the third set, getting a major boost from Walch, who finished the match tying her single game career high 24 kills while hitting .400 percent. In the fourth and fifth set alone, Walch was on point, contributing five kills in each and hitting .444. In addition to her offense on Friday, Walch contributed with five block assists, adding to a team total of 23 which is a season high. On Sunday, Walch was steady in the 3-1 win over Wake Forest, amassing 11 kills.
The Freshman of the Week, Kubura contributed a key effort in helping the Seminoles maintain an undefeated record. On Friday, Kubura held her own on the right side, contributing nine kills. In the decisive fifth set, Kubura swung for two big strikes, tying the set 7-7 before putting another away to put the Seminoles up 10-8. The big hands of Kubura also came in handy for four block assists, which contributed to the team total season high of 23. On Sunday, Kubura once again took care of the right side, helping the Seminoles with eight kills while teaming up for four block assists.
