North Carolina senior leads Tar Heels to 12th ACC Championship
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina senior opposite hitter Chaniel Nelson and Miami freshman setter Haley Templeton have earned this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball honors, as Nelson was named Player of the Week and Templeton was tabbed Freshman of the Week.
Nelson earns her second Player of the Week award, leading North Carolina with 3.38 kills/set this past week as the Tar Heels clinched the ACC Championship with two victories over Duke and Wake Forest. Against Duke, Nelson knocked down 14 kills and added five blocks as North Carolina fought past Duke, 3-2. Nelson was key in the fifth set, as she had three kills all in the last five points, including the match-winning kill to take the 15-13 win in the set. On Friday against Wake Forest, Nelson had 13 kills, including five kills in the final frame.
Templeton takes home her fifth Freshman of the Week award after her performance this weekend, including a return to her home state of Georgia. Against Georgia Tech, Templeton distributed 46 assists and added 12 digs, four kills, two blocks and an ace. The Alpharetta, Georgia, native recorded her fifth double-double of the season and also surpassed the 1,000-assist mark for the season. Two days later, Templeton dished out 39 assists, adding five digs and a kill against No. 8 Florida State in the regular season finale.
