Notre Dame’s Quentin Monaghan and Clemson’s Romy Koelzer earn honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame’s Quentin Monaghan and Clemson’s Romy Koelzer have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Players of the Week.
Monaghan continued his dominating season at No. 1 singles for the Irish, going 3-0 in singles on the weekend, kicking it off by knocking off third-ranked Ryan Shane in Notre Dame’s match against Virginia. Down 5-1 to Shane in the first set on Friday, Monaghan stormed back to force a tiebreaker, which he handily won, then completed the upset by breezing through the second for a 7-6(4), 6-3 win. In Sunday’s doubleheader, Monaghan defeated No. 66 Christopher Eubanks of Georgia Tech 6-4, 7-6(4), again making a comeback in the second set to secure the win in two, and made quick work of IPFW’s Gerard Guell, 6-1, 6-2. Monaghan is now 14-2 in dual play this season.
Koelzer was 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles matches last week, helping the 15th-ranked Tigers to 7-0 sweeps of College of Charleston and Syracuse on the road and a close 4-3 loss to No. 8 Virginia at home. Koelzer, ranked 43rd nationally in singles, upset the nation’s top-ranked singles player, Virginia’s Julia Elbaba, in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) in Friday’s tough loss to the Cavaliers. The senior from Betzdorf, Germany has now won four straight singles matches, and six of her last seven, playing against many of the top players in the country at the top singles slot. Koelzer and partner Tristen Dewar, ranked 72nd in doubles, were 2-1 in matches last week, with their only loss coming to Mercer & Morton of Virginia, the nation’s 23rd-ranked doubles duo.
