NC State’s Powell and North Carolina’s Kay earn honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State’s Austin Powell and North Carolina’s Whitney Kay have been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Players of the Week.
Powell won five matches on the weekend, as the Wolfpack went 3-0 against ranked foes. The senior, who is the nation’s 51st-ranked singles player, defeated 76th-ranked Gijs Linders of Michigan State in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) at the No. 1 singles position. His other two singles wins over Logan Staggs (6-1, 6-2) of Northwestern and Kert Kilumets (6-4, 6-3) were also in straight sets. In doubles, Powell and Simon Norenius defeated Sam Shropshire and Logan Staggs of Northwestern (6-2) and Mac Roy and Michael Dube of Michigan State (6-2).
Kay reached the semifinal round of singles and the finals of the doubles bracket this past weekend at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championship. Kay earned three singles wins, including a victory over 48th-ranked Zoe Scandalis of USC (2-6, 7-6 (20-18), 6-3). The loss in the semifinals came to Jennifer Brady of UCLA, who finished last season ranked No. 8 nationally. In doubles, she teamed up with Hayley Carter and reached the finals before falling to No. 12 Stanford duo of Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay.
