Jack Murray and Hayley Carter take down ranked opponents
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina’s Jack Murray and Hayley Carter have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Players of the Week.
Murray won both of his matches Sunday as No. 7 North Carolina upset No. 5 Oklahoma, 4-3, in Chapel Hill. The junior won his doubles match over Axel Alvarez and Spencer Papa with partner Brayden Schnur in the No. 2 spot. The Tar Heels dropped the doubles point, but Murray led the comeback by defeating No. 92 Alex Ghilea 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 spot. He is undefeated in both doubles and singles play this season, while UNC is undefeated at 6-0 heading into this weekend’s ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championship.
Carter led North Carolina to the finals of the 2016 ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championship and helped the Tar Heels defeat No. 13 Alabama, No. 18 LSU and No. 2 Georgia before falling to No. 6 California. The junior, who is ranked sixth nationally in singles, picked up three singles victories, all against ranked opponents at No. 1. She also teamed up with Whitney Kay for a pair of wins over ranked doubles teams. Carter and Kay are ranked No. 2 nationally in doubles.
