Trio collectively led teams to six wins
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame’s Alex Lawson, Florida State’s Benjamin Lock and Stephanie Wagner of Miami have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Players of the Week.
The Co-Male Player of the Week, Lawson clinched the upset for the Irish over No. 1 North Carolina. A native of Tempe, Ariz., the senior defeated No. 80 Robert Kelly to seal the deal for Notre Dame. It was the first victory over a No. 1 opponent for the Irish since 1992.
Lock earned Co-Male Player of the Week after his role in Florida State’s victories over No. 41 NC State, Louisville and Bethune-Cookman. The senior and native of Harare, Zimbabwe went 3-0 in singles and picked up one more doubles win, including one ranked win in each. In singles, Lock topped No. 55 Simon Norenius of NC State, and in doubles he partnered with fellow Seminole Marco Nunez to earn a victory over the No. 81 pair of Jeffrey Brown and Alex Gornet of Louisville. It is Lock's second Player of the Week honor.
The Female Player of the Week, Wagner played a key role in Miami’s wins over No. 20 Wake Forest and No. 37 NC State. A native of Amberg, Germany, the senior went undefeated in singles and doubles play, notching victories against three ranked opponents. Wagner took down NC State’s Martina Frantova (ranked No. 38), Kimmy Guerin of Wake Forest (No. 44), and partnered with teammate Wendy Zhang to defeat Wake Forest’s pair of Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko (No. 45). It is the fourth ACC Tennis Player of the Week honor for Wagner.
