Louisville’s Kelsi Jones and Notre Dame’s Rachel Nasland receive recognition
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Louisville outfielder Kelsi Jones has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while Notre Dame’s Rachel Nasland earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Jones helped the Cardinals to a 5-1 record on the week. The senior outfielder batted .556 (10 for 18) with a home run, a double, scored nine runs and had six RBI along with three stolen bases. Jones posted a .778 slugging percentage and a .692 on-base percentage that included eight walks – three of which were intentional. Jones tallied two hits and at least one run in all but one of Louisville’s six games. In the 9-7 come-from-behind win over Ohio State, Jones went 2 for 4 with two runs. In the ACC series against North Carolina, Jones batted .750 (6 for 8) with a double, a home run, five RBIs and four runs. She had two hits and at least one RBI in each of those games and was intentionally walked twice. With the Cards trailing 3-2, her two-run single in the fourth gave Louisville a 4-3 lead en route to a 6-4 final decision. She leads the team with a .438 average, 12 doubles, 23 runs and 11 stolen bases on the season.
Nasland kept up her recent dominance against ACC foes with an undefeated week in the circle, adding a nonconference victory against Cleveland State. The reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week posted a perfect 3-0 mark with a 1.47 ERA in three starts last week, scattering nine hits over 19 innings. Only four earned runs crossed against Nasland during the week, while the Irish righty yielded seven walks and struck out 25 hitters. She has only allowed four earned runs in her last 25.2 league innings pitched (1.09 ERA), posting a 3-1 mark in that span. Nasland picked up the win during Notre Dame’s home opening contest against Cleveland State on Wednesday, striking out nine Viking batters in five innings of work. The San Diego, California native cranked on all cylinders during the weekend ACC series with Georgia Tech, allowing one run on four hits, walking three and striking out six Yellow Jackets during a complete game win on Saturday. Nasland was nearly unhittable for the second straight Sunday in ACC play, surrendering only an infield single to Georgia Tech while striking out 10 in a one-hit shutout to complete the sweep. The Irish sophomore has now won four straight decisions, and has held opposing batters to a .180 batting average against in 115.2 total innings in 2015.
