North Carolina’s Kristen Brown and Notre Dame’s Rachel Nasland receive recognition
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina shortstop Kristen Brown has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while Notre Dame’s Rachel Nasland earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Brown terrorized opponents at the plate this past week, blasting four home runs, including a three-run blast and a solo shot in game two of the series against Boston College, helping keep the Tar Heels unbeaten in ACC play. Earlier in the week, her grand slam in the fourth inning against Coastal Carolina sealed the 14-6 victory for North Carolina. By the end of the week, the 2014 All-ACC shortstop had tallied 12 RBI and eight runs scored on seven hits, batting .538 with a slugging percentage of 1.538.
Nasland continued her steady sophomore season battling back from injury, posting a 2-1 record for Notre Dame last week in wins over Campbell and #9/10 Florida State. She threw her first career no-hitter, and the 35th solo (42nd total) no-hitter in Irish history in only five innings Sunday against FSU. Nasland retired 30 of the final 35 batters she faced during the two-game series with the Seminoles. Nasland scattered five hits in a complete-game effort at Campbell on Tuesday, walking two and striking out a career-high 11 batters over seven innings. Nasland then retired 14 consecutive FSU hitters in Saturday’s first game, and ultimately sat down 15 of the final 18 that she faced in a five-hit complete game. Only two batters reached by way of a walk in Sunday’s series finale as the San Diego, California native struck out four Seminole batters, forced seven fly ball outs and grounded out four FSU hitters to secure Notre Dame’s first-ever no-hitter against a top 10 opponent. It was Notre Dame’s third win over a top 10 opponent this season.
