Durham, N.C. & Charlottesville, Va. -- No. 7 Duke and No. 8 Virginia won their first round games on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the ACC Men’s Soccer Championship, held Sunday, Nov. 9 at campus sites.
The Cavaliers, ranked No. 15 in the NSCAA Poll, got a penalty kick score from Todd Wharton in the 55th minute and held on to defeat No. 9 Virginia Tech, 1-0. Virginia will travel to South Bend, Indiana, to face No. 1 Notre Dame on Sunday at 1 p.m. [Box Score]
Tied at 1-1, No. 10 NC State and No. 7 Duke traded goals in the final two minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime. In the 107th minute, Duke senior Nat Eggleston scored his second of the season to give the Blue Devils the 3-2 win in double overtime. Duke will face No. 2 Syracuse in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 1 p.m. [Box Score]
