Pannell and Barrett honored for efforts in win over No. 8 Cornell

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) –  Virginia’s James Pannell and Matt Barrett have been named the the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse  Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively after keying the Cavaliers to a 15-14 win over No. 8 Cornell.

Pannell, a junior attackman from Smithtown, New York, tallied a season-high six goals and seven points to help Virginia defeat No. 8 Cornell on March 7. Pannell scored three goals during a 6-1 run that spanned the first, second and third quarters, which turned a 4-3 UVa deficit into a 9-5 lead. He scored two more fourth-quarter goals to extend the Cavalier’s lead to 14-8.

Barret tallied a career-high 21 saves and helped turn away the Big Red on Saturday and give the Cavaliers their third win over a ranked opponent. The goalie from Glenmoore, Pa., posted nine saves in the second quarter and shutout Cornell despite the Big Red holding a man advantage for three minutes of the second frame. The Big Red was held to just one tally while UVa scored six goals to go ahead 9-5.
