North Carolina’s Sankey and Notre Dame’s Doyle share offensive honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina’s Joey Sankey and Notre Dame’s Conor Doyle share Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Fighting Irish teammate Shane Doss is this week’s ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Sankey totaled five points on four goals and an assist in North Carolina’s 10-6 win at No. 6 Virginia. The senior attackman’s first goal gave the Tar Heels a 3-2 lead early in the second quarter, before scoring three of North Carolina’s final four goals en route to the victory. Sankey has scored at least three goals in each of the Tar Heels’ ACC games this season.
Doyle registered a game-high seven points on a career-best three goals and four assists in a 15-10 win at No. 7 Duke. All three of his goals and two of his assists came in the first half as Notre Dame jumped out to 8-4 lead by halftime.
Doss made 17 saves in the win over the Blue Devils to collect his second ACC Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season. He made nine saves in the first half that helped hold Duke to just four goals by halftime. He and the Notre Dame defense also limited Duke’s leading scorer Myles Jones to just one goal and one assist. Doss has recorded double-digit saves in six of seven starts this season.
League play continues on this weekend with No. 4 North Carolina hosting No. 2 Syracuse on Saturday, April 11 at 4 p.m., and No. 6 Virginia playing at No. 7 Duke on Sunday, April 12 at Noon. Both games will air on ESPNU/WatchESPN app. The ACC Men’s Lacrosse Championship will be played at PPL Park in Philadelphia April 24 and 26, with the top four finishers from the regular season competing in the tournament.
