Duke’s Brucker and Fowler collect honors following a 15-8 win over Virginia
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Following a 15-8 win over No. 6 Virginia, Duke sophomore attackman Jack Bruckner has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate Danny Fowler is the Defensive Player of the Week.
Bruckner tallied a career-high seven goals, including five in the first half, to lead Duke to a crucial ACC victory on afternoon, which clinched a berth in the ACC Championship for the Blue Devils. The seven goals are the most by a Blue Devil since Zach Howell had seven in a win over Siena Feb. 12, 2011. Bruckner scored the first three goals for Duke and had five of the team’s seven in the first half. Bruckner’s previous career-high was four tallies twice before. Bruckner is second on the team in goals scored with 30.
In just his third career start, Fowler made a career-high 18 saves in goal to capture his first career ACC victory. The Cavaliers managed just three goals in the first two quarters as Fowler made 11 saves in the first half. The eight goals allowed by the Blue Devils are the fewest since Duke held Loyola to eight March 1. Duke was allowing just over 16 goals per game in ACC play heading into Sunday’s game and kept Virginia to just half that total. Fowler, a redshirt freshman, is averaging nearly 13 saves per game in his three starts.
