ACC Men’s Lacrosse: Players of the Week Named

North Carolina’s Pontrello and Virginia’s Barrett honored

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina’s Steve Pontrello has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Virginia’s Matt Barrett is this week’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Tar Heel attackman Pontrello scored a career-high six goals as No. 15 North Carolina won at No. 9 Duke 17-16 in overtime on Friday. It was Carolina’s first win at Duke in six years. Pontrello scored his six goals in seven shots on goal, and five of his goals were unassisted. He helped rally UNC from a three-goal deficit late in the third quarter by tying the game at 11-11 with 2:24 left in the quarter. He went on to score two more unassisted goals in the fourth quarter.

Virginia goalie Barrett recorded the eighth shutout in UVA men’s lacrosse history and first since 2007 when the Cavaliers blanked Richmond on the road, 9-0. He made 12 saves against the Spiders as the Virginia defense frustrated the Richmond offense all afternoon. Barrett played only 30 minutes in a drubbing of VMI, which included scoreless droughts by the Keydets of 27:00 and 15:12.
