ACC Field Hockey Quarterfinals: No. 7 Wake Forest Upsets No. 2 Syracuse

 


Deacons advance to play winner of Virginia/Boston College game

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest’s Sarah Thornhill scored the game-winning goal in overtime regulation, securing a 4-3 win over Syracuse (14-3) in the first round of the 2016 Field Hockey Championship in Winston-Salem, NC. 

This win advances Wake Forest (11-7) to the semifinals where they will play the winner of the Virginia/Boston College game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. 

Jule Grashoff scored early in the first to give the Demon Deacons an early 1-0 lead over second-seed Syracuse. The Orange responded shortly after on a penalty stroke by Orange defender Lies Lagerweij to even the score. 

 Forwards Madi Julius and Emily Adamson secured Wake Forest's 3-1 lead going into the half after both scoring off of penalty corners. Keeping the game close, Syracuse sophomore Roos Weers scored two goals within two minutes off of penalty corners, tying the game at 3-3 with 20 minutes remaining in the match. 

Late in the second half, Deacon goalie Cat O’Connor made a crucial save on a penalty stroke against Lagerweij, which would ultimately send the game into overtime.  

This was the fifth first-round match in ACC history that was forced into overtime regulation.
