Louisville’s Mason, Virginia’s Vittese recognized

ACC Players of the Week Presented by Havoline

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Louisville senior back Mallory Mason and Virginia freshman midfielder Tara Vittese have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Co-Players of the Week after leading their teams to upsets in conference play over the weekend.

Mason was instrumental in the 14th-ranked Cardinals’ 3-2 upset of No. 1 North Carolina. She scored her second and third goals of the season on penalty corners to give Louisville a 2-0 lead in the first half. After the Tar Heels tied the game, the native of Simsbury, Conn., inserted the ball to start the corner that resulted in the eventual game-winning goal. The victory was the first over a top-ranked opponent in program history.

Vittese came up big in two victories over top-10 opponents this weekend. In the 2-1 victory at No. 3 Duke, she scored the first Cavalier goal and set up the second score. In Sunday’s 3-2 overtime
